A light, striped stair runner for a brand-new home in Etobicoke
Our customer got the keys to her new home in Etobicoke and came straight to us — literally the day she moved in. She needed carpeting and window coverings for the whole house, and the stairs were at the top of the list. She had a white look in mind, and she needed it to be tough enough for everyday life. Here's how it came together.
How we did it, in Maria's words
This set of stairs was a little bit complicated because of the pie steps. When you have pie steps, the stairs have to be templated. And with a pattern like this one, we cut extra carefully to make sure the stripes match nicely.
We chose the carpet based on what the customer needed. She was looking for something durable, and she had a white colour in mind. A white that can stand up to real life is tricky to find, but this nylon from Stanton is very durable and pet friendly. It did the job for her.
So we measured, we had it custom made and bound, and we had the installer come back to install it. The installation was tricky — it took a full day to do one set of stairs. But it's worth it. It looks just magnificent.
Pie steps are the wedge-shaped steps where a staircase turns a corner. Every one is a slightly different shape, so we make a paper template of each step before anything is cut.
The carpet: San Martino by Rosecore
San Martino is a hand-loomed carpet with a fine, soft stripe, from Stanton's Rosecore line. Up close it has a lovely texture — a mix of cut and looped yarns that gives the colour some depth — and it's much softer underfoot than you'd expect from something this hard-wearing. Our customer chose the colour Winter White.

Why a light colour works in this one
L.I.O.N. stands for Luxury Indoor Outdoor Nylon. The colour goes right into the yarn when it's made, instead of being dyed on the surface afterwards. That's why it holds its colour so well, and why it can be cleaned with normal household cleaners — even bleach, for the really bad spills. The yarn doesn't soak up liquid, so red wine and pet accidents come out far more easily than you'd think. It's also protected against fading from the sun, and it can even be used outdoors.

Stanton backs San Martino with a 10-year limited wear warranty for homes, a 5-year limited wear warranty for commercial spaces, and a 5-year StainSafe stain warranty. San Martino comes in six colours. The stripe is the same in all of them — what changes is the feel, from soft whites and warm beige through to greys and a deep blue.
